Maybe a much better one is "alright, babe", for instance. :-P

acmd wrote:Don't you feel annoyed by Britons who constatly call you 'mate' :?: (if you are a man of course). I know that I'm twenty-sth and I don't expect the barman/cashier to call me 'sir', but still. A guy from the broadband company came to us the other day to fix the net - he was here for like 15 minuts and he was able to call me 'mate' like 20 times :???:
And, of course - 'cheers'... Can't they say 'thanks' or 'bye'... I can't get it.

And you mate  keep using "like" ;) hehe.
I don't have a problem with people calling me "mate" (although it doesn't happen as often as if I was a man - I suppose) I sometmes call sb "mate", and even my girl - friends. (Most of my girl - friends call each other "babe" and believe me - that is far worse! )

I'm in my 2nd year at the uni but I don't speak "Queen English" ;) I suppose it's because of the way I was brought up (amongst "common people" )

Anyway, we all have expressions we like - and ones that we don't. We just have to learn to live with it. Or (as someone has already suggested) pack our bags and leave  )

Speak l8r - mates!

I know what you mean. Some of my people do the same. They try to push their way and try to act like the English, try to speak like them...

I mean, I try not to speak English with a harsh foreign accent. But when someone just puts on an affected speech and they still have the accent... Or when someone act like they can't remember a word in their language after a few months in England. That's just disgusting. People like that make me nervous.

Even if you are in your twentys, your problem is, that you don't understand this 'mate' in a way british does. Cleaning staff at my uni, other students and even tutors don't give a fuck, I'am a mate for all of 'em... For them everybody's mate. If you have any english friends, especially female ones you can notice, that they call everybody a mate, even female friends... So basicly, mate is not a bloke only, but a girl as well.

If someone would ask me the way you suggested i would think "what a wanker" and my answer is NO straight away (even if I have got them).

I like the way engilsh talk to people and don't mind If they are nice to you event if they don't like you ;) I just don't care

Why not?
For your information mate literally means 'kumpel' so what's wrong with that? All my English mates call me 'mate' and I have no problem with that. If you want to know mate also means a spouse (US English mostly), a partner (=a husband or a wife); so there you go... :-P
